This hiv-prevention sign (from Ghana) offers three options: don’t have any sex at all, have it with only one other person forever or have the sex you want but use condoms. The choice is in your hands, meaning no authority figure is proclaiming which choice is rightyou have to decide for yourself. I know some people dislike this ABC strategy because they don’t want abstinence to be there at all; I also know some critics think this approach neglects the realities of sex workers, gays and drug users. And I am sure some people dislike Love Life as smarmy. It’s a slogan, that’s all, and I put it here because it represents a humanistic way to think about sex and risk. Note that if you opt out of choosing, police are not mandated to force or rescue you from whatever you are doing.

swarming the city on Saturday. Representatives from about 44 countries will be congregating on July 21 and 22 over Freedom of Sex Workers that will run parallel to the XIX International AIDS Conference being organized in Washington DC from Sunday. The sex workers cannot be at Washington DC due to restriction on movement of the community by the US government.

“We have been working in the field of HIV/AIDS for the past 20 years. It is unfortunate that the community that is most vulnerable to infection has not been included to as a part of the conference, Therefore, we had to take up this parallel conference,” said Bharati Dey, secretary, Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee (DMSC).

The first-ever Global Hub of the International AIDS Conference is being hosted and co-hosted by DMSC, Global Network of Sex Workers (NWSP) and All India Network of Sex Workers (AINSW) respectively. The meet in Kolkata will have direct communication through satellitelink with the Washington DC conference. Adding glamour to the meet will be the likes of Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, a well known activist who will host the conference.

“This conference has been held for over a decade25 years. But people living with HIV and the most at-risk communities have been prohibited for the first time by the US government, due to their ignorant policy,” said Dr Samrajit Jana, DMSC chief advisor.

US government travel restrictions for sex workers mean that many of us will not be able, or will not want to go to the IAC in Washington this year. The Sex Worker Freedom Festival is an alternative event for sex workers and our allies to protest our exclusion and ensure the voices of those excluded are heard in Washington.

The festival programme will focus on freedoms that we are all entitled to:

  • Freedom of movement and to migrate;
  • Freedom to access quality health services;
  • Freedom to work and choose occupation;
  • Freedom to associate and unionise;
  • Freedom to be protected by the law;
  • Freedom from abuse and violence; and
  • Freedom from stigma and discrimination.
